As we all know, there’s something of a profusion out there of books about science, technology and society in its myriad forms.
Sorting through this heap can be something of a difficult task, and so it’s with some delight that I’ve just heard about the New Books in Science, Technology and Society initiative.
It ‘aims for a broadly interdisciplinary coverage of recently-published books in science studies’ and appears to have started at the end of January this year.
The site isn’t, as one might imagine, simply a list of articles about interviews with authors. No, it features actual, real discussions with them, and the entries come in the form of podcasts.
Recent titles covered include “Scientific Realism: Knowing the Unobservable“,”Hide and Seek: Camouflage, Photography, and the Media of Reconnaissance“, and “Behind Closed Doors: IRBs and the Making of Ethical Research“.
It’s part of the New Books Network, whose tagline is ‘discussions with authors about their new books’, and says of itself that it’s ‘a consortium of podcasts dedicated to raising the level of public discourse by introducing serious authors to serious audiences’.
A worthy idea, certainly, and I’ll be watching both sites with interest. A big thanks to Geoff Bil for the heads up :)
